Abstract
This review of John S. Hammett’s Biblical Foundations for Baptist Churches: A Contemporary Ecclesiology (Kregel, 2005) evaluates the work as both a denominational study and a broader contribution to ecclesiology. Hammett’s aim is to develop a biblical doctrine of the church by progressing from scriptural foundations to practical ministry application. The review highlights the book’s strengths, including its careful use of ekklesia, integration of biblical teaching with practical application, and strong treatment of regenerate church membership, governance, and the ministries of the local church. At the same time, weaknesses are noted, such as the tendency to assume Baptist distinctives too early, limited engagement with broader historical perspectives, and insufficient exploration of alternative church governance models. Overall, the review commends the work as a valuable, Scripture-based resource on ecclesiology that merits engagement beyond Baptist circles, while critiquing its denominational framing as potentially limiting its reach.
